Also political policy of the Scottish Nazi Party Trolls

BUT PEOPLE ARE ALSO USING ANONYMITY TO CALL OUT RACISM, SEXISM, HOMOPHOBIA AND ALL TYPES OF HARASSMENT

KASSEM YOUNIS, CREATOR OF THOUGHTS AROUND ME AND CEO OF MANA SAID:

“Unfortunately it is true that social media can be hijacked by those who wish to misuse it. However, used properly, social media is a fantastic tool for society – connecting people with common interests and allowing them to experience new and exciting things.

“The vast majority of users of social media use the platforms appropriately. Of course, inappropriate behaviour should be called out online just as it is offline.

“The case where a man sent 700 messages without a reply is thankfully a rare one, though no less serious. It is important that social media companies remain vigilant towards behaviours such as this and do all they can to promote a healthy online environment.

“Social media is actually a force for good and can actually combat harassment. We must not let the few spoil it for everyone else. For most it is an excellent way of keeping in contact, sharing opinions and even calling out bad practices. Many of these cases are caused because people can act anonymously. However there is a positive side to anonymity.

“On Thoughts Around Me we have seen examples of racism, sexism and discrimination in the workplace being reported anonymously, and our online community is a supportive one.

We must provide a welcoming environment for those who have been abused to report any malpractice and the support should be there for them when these unfortunate situations arise.”
