Is there such thing as a GDPR ‘silver bullet’?

GDPR is clearly moving into view on the horizon, and many organisations have left themselves unprepared. Veritas, data management specialists, recently asked the question as to whether automation was the ‘silver bullet’ for the impending regulation.

Phil Beckett, MD of Disputes and Investigations, at Alvarez and Marsal commented:

“With regards to GDPR, there is no such thing as a silver bullet. Organisations really need to understand the business processes, where data is used and how it is being used before tackling the legal principles behind it. And only then, should technological solutions, such as automation, be considered.  Unfortunately, what we are seeing is a large number of companies attempting to tackle the legal issues first, leaving the actual data to an afterthought.

In light of this, when companies have a comprehensive understanding of their data, and then adopt both a technological and legal approach to achieving GDPR compliance, their data environment will not only satisfy governance, but could offer asset value above their competitors. Is this a silver bullet? I’d suggest it’s simply the baseline of good business going forward.”
