Hacked accounts sold for £1 on the dark web

News is breaking that hacked social media accounts are being sold online, sometimes to promote hate speech, for menial sums. One site is selling UK-based Facebook accounts “with real Sim cards, birthday and location information included”, according to The Sunday Telegraph. On another, a single UK account is on sale for $1.50 (£1.07), discounted from $5.

Commenting on this, Andy Norton, director of threat intelligence at Lastline said:

“A current UK credit card with PIN number is selling for about 40 USD on the Olympic marketplace. In a lot of cases, the dark markets are selling accounts they created and seeded rather than accounts that have been hacked. When someone is a victim of key-logging we almost always see social media accounts exfiltrated along side, corporate portals and retail online accounts”
