Hundreds of German politicians including Chancellor Angela Merkel have had personal details hacked and published online, reports say. Contacts, private chats and credit card details were put out on Twitter which belong to figures from every political party except the mainstream center right AfD.
Commenting on the news is Javvad Malik, security advocate at AlienVault:
“While it’s not clear how the attacks were perpetrated, or the extent of the breach. It is clear is that cybercrime is the method of choice for most criminals, whether they be trying to rob a bank, defraud members of the public, knock services offline, embarrass governments or share otherwise confidential information.
Unfortunately, there is no silver bullet solution to this growing challenge and it will require a mixture of technical controls, procedural controls, and perhaps more importantly, raised awareness among individuals in how to better identify and understand the threats that they face and how to protect themselves adequately.”
